The Kingdom of Spain, better known as Spain, is a country located in Southern Europe. The Spanish mainland is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east, by the Cantabric Sea that includes the Bay of Biscay to the north, and by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal to the west. The Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands off the African coast. With and area of 504.030 km, Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe (after France).
Cities
The capital, Madrid, is the biggest city in the country. Other cities of great economic, social and cultural importance are: Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Saragoza, Aragón and Bilbao.
The government system and language
Spain is a democracy organized as a parliamentary monarchy, and has been a member of the European Union since 1986.
Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities and two cities, Ceuta and Melilla. These autonomous communities are subdivided into 50 provinces.
Historically, some provinces are also divided into “comarcas”. The lowest administrative division of Spain is the municipality.
Spanish is the official language of Spain, but other regional languages are also spoken, and are the primary languages in some of their respective geographies.
Wildlife
The most common tree in Spain is the oak. The elm and the chestnut are very popular too! In the central plain, grass and vine grow both. Respect to the animals, the wolves, linxes, wildcats, foxes, wild boars, deers and rabbits are the most common of the zone. Also, there is a big variety of birds.
We chose the second option because we thought it will be more interesting to investigate a country than one of the seven wonders of the modern world. We really like Spain so we decided to do this project work about it.
